The Karamu Performing Arts Theatre's next production is Voodoo Macbeth, an adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy that sets the action in the Caribbean. Orson Welles created this version of the play in 1936 as part of the WPA funded Federal Theater Project. Performances of Voodoo Macbeth are in the Jelliffe Theatre, April 1-24, Thursday-Saturday at 8 pm, Sunday at 3 pm. Tickets are $9 and $10. For reservations telephone 755-7077.
The Cleveland Public Theatre, in association with the Performance Art Festival, is presenting a weekend called Orphans of Dada by the New World Performance Laboratory. Two bills of two plays each will be performed, one on March 24 and 27 at 8 pm, and the other on March 25 at 8 pm and March 27 at 3 pm. On March 26 from 8 pm to sunrise, Essential Demonstrations-An Evening of Theatre Ecology will take place under the direction of Jairo Cuesta. Tickets are $8 and $6 (students/seniors). STATE FARM
The Performance Art Festival Open is scheduled from March 29 through April 10. It includes ten nights of non-stop performance art, featuring ten short pieces each night by artists from around the world. It is billed as being "uncensored, unjuried, and uninhibited." Performances are at the Cleveland Public Theatre and start at 7 pm. Tickets are $10 and $8. For reservations telephone 491-1716. For information telephone 221-6017.
John Fleck, Cleveland native, L.A. based, performance artist, and one of the NEA de-funded four, will present a world premiere of his new piece on Sunday, April 3, at the Cleveland Public Theatre at 8 pm. The piece is about a minor celebrity's struggle to experience something genuine on the stage. In it issues of celebrity, public personae, and media power collide with body politics, sexual fears, AIDS, and mortality. This performance is part of the Performance Art Festival. Gay Lesbian Bisexual Alliance at CWRU presents, The Spirit and the Flesh: Sexual Diversity in American Indian Culture on Friday, April 8th, at 7:30pm in Hatch Auditorium. Dr. Walter L. Williams, professor at the University of Southern California, will discuss the historical and cross-cultural legacy of same-sex relationships in nonhomophobic societies. In particular
he will discuss the role of the Berdache in American Indian Culture.
